How to Refresh QuickBooks Desktop in 2 Minutes (Quick + Deep Fixes)
There are two very different ways to refresh QuickBooks Desktop.
A quick refresh simply reloads a window, list, or report that looks stuck. A deep refresh closes leftover background processes and repairs the program itself — this is what the old QuickBooks Refresher Tool used to do and what Quick Fix my Program does today.
Most freezing, lagging, or “not updating” problems are solved by the deep method. Use the quick method first only when a single screen is outdated. The steps below show both so you can pick the right one in under a minute.
Need the deep fix right now? Open Tool Hub and go straight to the Program Problems section while you read.
Quick Refresh vs Deep Refresh — Which One Do You Need?
How to Do a Deep Refresh (the Modern Replacement for the Refresher Tool)
The deep refresh is the current version of what used to be called the QuickBooks Refresher Tool. It lives inside the QuickBooks Tool Hub.
- Close every open QuickBooks Desktop window.
- Open QuickBooks Tool Hub.
- Double-click the desktop icon, or
- Click the Windows Start button, type QuickBooks Tool Hub, and open the app.
- Select the Program Problems tab on the left.
- Click Quick Fix my Program.
- Wait for the tool to finish (usually 1–2 minutes).
- Open QuickBooks Desktop and open your company file.
This single action ends leftover QuickBooks processes (the same job the old QBRefresher.exe performed) and runs a quick repair on the program files.
Click Program Problems → Quick Fix my Program now while this guide is open. Most users see the difference the moment they reopen QuickBooks.
If Tool Hub Is Missing or Quick Fix my Program Won’t Run
- Search Windows for “QuickBooks Tool Hub.” If nothing appears, download the latest version from the official Intuit site and install it.
- If Tool Hub opens but Quick Fix my Program is missing or freezes, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, end any QBW32.exe, QBDBMgr.exe, or QuickBooksToolHub.exe processes, then try again.
- Still stuck? Move to the Installation Issues tab and run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool.
When a Simple Refresh Is Not Enough
After the deep refresh, if QuickBooks is still slow or unstable:
- Check Task Manager for leftover QuickBooks processes and end them manually.
- Run the full Install Diagnostic Tool.
- Only then consider a repair or clean install of QuickBooks Desktop.

Desktop vs QuickBooks Online
Everything on this page applies only to QuickBooks Desktop.
QuickBooks Online refreshes differently: use your browser’s refresh (F5 or Ctrl+R), clear the cache, or sign out and back in. There is no Tool Hub or Refresher Tool for Online.
Take the Next Step Right Now
You now know the difference between a quick window refresh and a deep program refresh.
- For a stuck list or report → press F5 or reopen the window.
- For freezing, lagging, or processes that will not die → open Tool Hub → Program Problems → Quick Fix my Program.
Ready to clear the problem for good? Open Tool Hub and run Quick Fix my Program this minute.
