To become a security licensed guard in New York, you have to fulfill the following requirements of the NYS Department of State:

• Age Requirement: You have to be 18 years of age or older.
• Training: Attend the 8-hour Pre-Assignment Training Course at KTI NYC and obtain your certificate of completion.
• Application: Fill out and submit the official security guard license application to the NYS Department of State.
• Fingerprinting: Get fingerprinted at IdentoGO and retain your receipt for submission.
• Identification: Present a valid photo NYS driver's license or non-driver ID.
• Criminal History: You cannot have any severe criminal convictions that make you ineligible for licensing.

After you have finished these steps, you'll have your official New York State Security License and can start working as a licensed security professional.

Keeping Your Security License

Once you have received your security license, you'll need to undertake regular training to maintain it active and valid.

16-Hour On-the-Job Training: You'll need to do this within 90 days of taking up work as a security guard.

8-Hour Annual In-Service Training: Each year, you'll need to take this refresher course in order to retain your license and stay aware of security legislation, emergency response, and professional standards.
