A Winter Dream Come True: The Day I Reached Kedarkantha’s Summit

Ever since I saw a picture of the snow-covered Kedarkantha peak, I dreamed of standing on that summit one day. The thought of walking through pine forests, crossing frozen lakes, and seeing the mighty Himalayas up close filled me with excitement.

I had read so many stories about the Kedarkantha trek, but nothing could have prepared me for what I experienced that winter. This is the story of how a simple dream turned into one of the most beautiful adventures of my life the day I reached the Kedarkantha summit.

The Start of the Journey

My journey began in a small mountain village called Sankri, located in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. It is the base camp for the Kedarkantha trek and one of the most peaceful places I’ve ever seen. The village, surrounded by snow-dusted pine trees, had a calm charm. The air was cold but refreshing, and the view of white peaks shining in the distance filled my heart with joy.

We were a group of ten trekkers, led by two local guides who knew every turn of the mountain. That evening, as we sat around a small bonfire, they told us stories about Kedarkantha of how locals believed Lord Shiva once meditated here. The warmth of the fire, the laughter of new friends, and the clear night sky full of stars made me realize how lucky I was to be there.

Day One: Into the Forest of Snow

The next morning, we started our trek. The trail from Sankri to Juda Ka Talab was about four kilometers long, and though it sounded easy, the climb felt challenging because of the snow. The path went through dense forests of pine and oak trees. Every step crunched under the fresh snow, and tiny snowflakes danced in the air like they were welcoming us.

As we moved higher, I could see the first signs of winter magic frozen streams, snow-covered leaves, and icicles hanging from branches. After a few hours of slow climbing, we reached Juda Ka Talab, a beautiful frozen lake surrounded by tall trees. The view was breathtaking. We set up our tents near the lake and watched the sunset paint the snow in shades of orange and pink.

That night was freezing. The temperature dropped below zero, but the sight of the starlit sky made up for the cold. It felt like the stars were shining just for us.

Day Two: The Climb Gets Tougher

The second day’s trek was from Juda Ka Talab to the Kedarkantha Base Camp, about four kilometers uphill. The snow got deeper, and the air thinner. Every step required effort, but with every turn, the views became more stunning. The forest opened into clearings that gave us wide views of the surrounding mountains. We could see the peaks of Swargarohini, Black Peak, and Bandarpoonch standing tall and proud in the distance.

By afternoon, we reached the base camp at an altitude of about 11,000 feet. The place was straight out of a dream white snow everywhere, soft sunlight, and silence that touched the soul. We could see the Kedarkantha summit from our campsite, looking majestic and a little intimidating. It was hard to believe that by the next morning, we would be standing on top of that very peak.

That evening, our guide briefed us about the summit climb. We had to start early, around 3 a.m., because the snow becomes soft after sunrise, making it risky to climb. We packed our bags, checked our torches, and went to bed early, trying to calm our excited hearts.

Day Three: Reaching the Summit

When the alarm rang at 3 a.m., I stepped out of the tent, and what I saw left me speechless. The sky was full of stars, and the moonlight made the snow shine like silver. The air was freezing, and I could see my breath form small clouds. Wrapped in layers of wool and jackets, we started our climb toward the Kedarkantha summit.

The trail was steep and narrow, covered with deep snow. Our headlamps made small circles of light as we walked in a line, one behind the other. The mountain was silent, except for the sound of our boots and heavy breathing. Step by step, we moved up.

As the first light of dawn touched the peaks, the sky turned orange and pink. It was one of the most beautiful sights I had ever seen. My tiredness vanished, replaced by a sense of wonder. We finally reached the summit at around 7 a.m.

Standing on the Kedarkantha summit at 12,500 feet, I felt pure joy. The world below was covered in snow, and the endless line of Himalayan peaks surrounded us. I could see mountains like Har Ki Dun, Rupin Pass, and Swargarohini shining under the morning sun. The wind was cold but felt fresh and alive. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath this was the moment I had dreamed of.

The Way Back Down

After spending some time at the top, taking pictures and soaking in the view, it was time to head back. Going down was easier but required care, as the snow had started melting in the sun. We returned to base camp for lunch and then began our descent to Sankri the next day. The forests looked different in the morning light quieter and calmer, as if they were bidding us goodbye.

When we finally reached Sankri, I looked back at the mountains with gratitude. Kedarkantha had given me not just an adventure, but also a sense of peace I had never felt before. The journey taught me patience, teamwork, and the simple joy of walking through nature.

Every snowfall, every breath of cold air, and every step on that mountain became a memory I’ll carry forever.
